Energy Flow in an Ecosystem describes how energy moves through living organisms in nature. To begin with, the sun serves as the primary source of energy. Green plants, also called producers, absorb sunlight and convert it into food through photosynthesis. As a result, they initiate the energy flow in the ecosystem.
Next, herbivores—known as primary consumers—feed on producers and gain energy. Then, secondary consumers (such as carnivores) eat herbivores, followed by tertiary consumers that feed on other carnivores. This step-by-step transfer of energy forms a food chain. Furthermore, when multiple food chains connect, they create a food web, showing a more complex energy flow.
Each step in this chain is called a trophic level. Importantly, as energy moves from one level to the next, most of it gets lost as heat. In fact, only about 10% of the energy transfers to the next level. This principle is known as the 10% law.
In addition, decomposers like fungi and bacteria break down dead plants and animals. Consequently, they return nutrients to the soil, which helps producers grow again and keeps the ecosystem balanced.
